Welcome to the game; you are the Reluctant Occultist
ALIGNMENT: Town GENERIC: Coroner WIN CONDITION: All Scum and malicious third-parties (if any) have been vanquished.
BACKGROUND:
You've spent your life so far studying the Dark Arts. Well, more glancing at the Dark Arts than really studying them per se, but who can blame you? The actual Dark Arts are awfully... dark... after all. Seriously, one of those spells required you to sacrifice a chicken! After all you and Bruce had been through, were you really going to cut off his loyal little beak?
So you have the wavy dagger, you've learned to draw the upside down pentacle, and you know most of the chants. But a career in this particular field just isn't for you; you figure if you play a lot of Diablo, it'll scratch essentially the same itch without requiring you to, like, cut yourself with the wavy dagger.
That said, your reading has given you some understanding of what Demons are, and of how they typically work. So you should be able to put that knowledge to good use, at least until the Demons identify you and you become The Reluctant Occultist Killed in a Seance Gone Horribly Wrong.
POWERS:
1. Once per Day, you may investigate the body of any player who has (previously) died by any means other than a lynch. At Dusk, you will be informed whether that player was killed by Scum. Any Scum-directed death will qualify; deaths occuring by any other means will not be distinguishable from one another, as all will be reported as simply "non-Scum."

The description seems to indicate that only one of two results is possible. Is this correct? What is the result if someone dies from the Necronomicon? Ash's Hand? There are cases that do not fit neatly into Scum or Town/Third Party.

I intend only two possible results: Scum or Non-Scum.
Ash's Hand would be a Scum kill. Any kill made using the Necronomicon would be Non-Scum.
PM reworded to clarify.

I'm not sure if the semantics of "scum" is well-established. Personally, I refer to all non-Town as scum and as such Third Parties are included in my definition of scum. I know that others think differently. I believe the use of "scum" and "non-scum" is ambiguous regarding 3rd Parties such as an SK.

How about I include in the Rules/Setup information a disclaimer that the word "Scum" will be used exclusively to refer to members of the Deadite collective corresponding to the Mafia in a standard game; other anti-Town players, if any exist, will have other designations?

Changing the word Scum to Deadite would work nicely, as long as you don't mind them misidentifying any Night Kill carried out by the Godfather.

You can clarify it in the rules, but I would also explicitly clarify that to the Occultist. Something like "scum" refers to the Deadite faction.
